Average employee gross earnings up 3.2 per cent in 2021

The Statistical Services of Cyprus has announced recently that the average gross monthly earnings of employees for 2021 increased by 3.2 per cent compared to 2020 to €2,067.The median gross monthly earnings of employees were €1,614.The Average monthly earnings of employees are calculated by dividing the total gross earnings before any deductions for compulsory social security contributions, by the total number of employees who received remuneration. The data source is the records of the Social Insurance Services.Companies need to consider the data to ensure that their salary scales are in line with that of other companies. Failure to do so, will potentially lead to losing employees. It will also be much harder for companies to recruit quality candidates if they do not keep with the benchmark.

The Civil Registry and Migration Department in Cyprus announced that they received 9090 applications for relocation for individuals working for international companies since the government’s strategy for attracting businesses and talent came into force in January 2022.

What is a fair salary?

A recent survey of the Cyprus jobs market has revealed that half of all workers on the island are paid €1,500 or less a month.The two main arguments that normally follow from this is:1. The cost of living went up so employees need higher salaries2. Why are employees paid so little?Indeed, we live in a world where our cost of living has increased dramatically, and yet, considering the research, wages are relatively low. The problem is that businesses cannot keep on compensating employees to make up for the higher cost of living, as this is unsustainable over the long run.At the end, should the real question then not be:Do employers compensate employees fairly based on their experience, skills, qualifications, productivity and actual job function?

Pay gap between men and woman in Cyprus and the EU

The Commissioner for Gender Equality, Iosifina Antoniou announced that the pay gap between men and women in Cyprus is 9%.This means that women on the island earn 91 cents for every €1 earned by men.Iosifina went on stating that the gab is even bigger when one considers the EU figures where women earn 87 cents for every €1 earned by men.We have been promoting equality in the workplace for years but still, it seems that not much has changed.We should ask ourselves… why this is still the case in 2022?
